yeap i got those guys in my tank at different time with sps and they never touched anything in my tank. Right now I have a pigmy and a flame and they both havent touch anything. It has been over 5 years. Am thinking about adding an Asfur :D :D

You can peel it off with the use of as stainless steel propagation tool. I used to have that problem too :D, just make sure to peel/or cut off all of the tissues or it will return.

Those hammer are very nasty, if you let the polyps tips touches your arms or hand, it might even cause your skin to blistered so be careful when you work inside your tank.

If the socks need to be clean twice a week, that means it is filtering thing for you. So why you stop? LOL I found that my tank and especially my sump will have much less detritus when I use socks so I have 10 socks that I rotate and washed regularly.
