What chiller hp for my tank?

I used a 1/10 HP chiller on my 60 gallon display tank (29 gallon sump) in southern California with no problems. It was easy to run the flexible tubes for the chiller pump through the sump... slightly more planning to move water from the chiller up to the display tank.

    Moving Skimmer Location

My 29 gallon used to have a hang-on skimmer (without a surface skimmer) and no sump. I noticed a film develop on the water's surface. Since I drilled the tank and added a sump (with a skimmer inside the sump), the water appears clearer. I'd recommend an in-sump skimmer.

75g Reef Tank - Progress (From Planning to Start-Up)

Congratulations! Like Mike, I am also really worried about the heater being exposed to air. Glad you will submerge it today. You might want to zip tie the cords from your lights & the cords in the back of the sump. To quiet the water down to the sump, you might want to extend the drain tube...

Dying Leopard Sharks in the Bay?

The articles say that a state expert has begun to study the shark deaths. Nobody is jumping to conclusions.

Dying Leopard Sharks in the Bay?

Support for the salinity hypothesis from the Chronicle article John linked: Though they don't venture out into the deep sea, they do favor water with salinity levels at the higher end of the spectrum, said Wes Dowd, a postdoctoral scholar at Stanford University's Hopkins Marine Station in...

Dying Leopard Sharks in the Bay?

Very sad. I've been kayaking in Tomales bay where the leopard sharks breed, and it's amazing to see them in the shallow, calm waters. AP Article Marin Article San Mateo Article Peninsula Article

    Strange or run-of-the-mill Euphyllia?

I am definitely not a coral expert, but I have coral that looks like yours, and someone once identified it as grape coral.

    Internal Overflow: Flood Prevention

Good point... don't rely solely on the check-valve. I've had great luck with the clear ones (no failures in a bit over 3 years), but it sounds like Greg isn't the only one to have a problem with a failure.

    Internal Overflow: Flood Prevention

I'd also recommend a clear check-valve attached to your return pump. That way, you won't have a siphon through your return line if you lose power or if the pump seizes. The clear ones are more expensive, but you can see if there is a problem developing.

    Activated Carbon: HHLE Smoking Gun

Wow, thank you for sharing the article. I went home and removed my mesh bag of ROX premium carbon (which was well-rinsed before placing in my sump). Wonder if the difference between ROX and lignite carbon would have any effect on HLLE. Don't want to risk having my tangs develop erosion.

    Duncan Polyps Sliming Over

My duncan polyps retract for a few days when a new head is forming, but they don't develop the slime that you described & photographs. I'm stumped.

Tank Issues and Using an Immersion Blender

That's creative! How long did you use the blender? I also have a problem with the Salinity mix remaining cloudy when mixing with a powerhead.

    New to the forum

Welcome! Does your tank already come with a stand? You will learn a lot by reading some tank threads, as Jon suggested. This is a great club, and you should mark your calendar for the BAYMAC event in May.
