This is why I got out of the hobby...

To be fair, they were not thriving in those environments or anything. They definitely shriveled up like they were not liking the situation, it's just as soon as they went back in salt water they sprung back to life.

This is why I got out of the hobby...

Yes they are, about a decade ago I did an experiment, aiptasia in freshwater outside for a month... still survived. aiptasia in chloramined SF tap water for month... still survived. aiptasia in undiluted muratic acid, the rock it was on was gone but it survived.

Oh that used to be my go to method, literal rock removal, and that works... until it doesn't or you get tired of disassembling your rock and rebuilding it, that was on the 200 and 300 gallon tanks. This 20 gallon has 3 pieces of rock, and I figured I could stay on top of things fairly easily...

This is why I got out of the hobby...

I mean having series of unfortunately tank events certainly was a gut punch... but this is what made me just go "f*** it, I'm done with this" So I'm taking pictures of some zoas, to get ID'd that I ironically picked up last swap at Mission Blue as I forgot what they were called and they grew...

Science Teacher and Relatively New Reefer

I can donate as much dry rock as you might need/want. It's actual rock for reefs, not just random rock from the ground. But it's not live anymore, been sitting in totes for a few years now, so no microfauna on it, but bacteria will populate it just fine. But SFUSD really has marine...

Ok, I'm really curious how you're going to turn a home depot storage rack into a stand.

    Oakland/SF Tap Water

1 year seems awfully frequent for an RO membrane, but then again I don't know how much water you're making either. "Easy" way to determine is for sediment/carbon, look to manufacturer's specs, and change it as recommended with a flow meter hooked in (I know.. more equipment), remember total...

Changes to frag swaps going forward

This seems to conflict with Seems that there shouldn't be a problem enforcing already existing rules, I mean the one I went to Brisbane last time I noticed one of my lobos was removed from a container and kept aside, now I didn't follow up on it, not sure if they wanted to turn the two I put...

    Oakland/SF Tap Water

Well if you decide to use tap, you definitely need to worry about chloramines in the water, I'm not sure what EBMUD uses but I'm assuming the whole region does similar bits with disinfecting water. As for wasting water... I'm ok with that if it's cheaper than resin replacement, at the end of...

    2025 Budget Tank Build Exhibition

Honestly, I think it would better to treat it as a dictatorship rather than a democracy, you came up with the contest then your rules apply, that said there's absolutely nothing wrong asking for input. Then again *IF* I end up doing it, as I'm not quite sure I want to put the effort in...

    2025 Budget Tank Build Exhibition

definitely curious what people are going to do for lighting, I'm tempted to get in on this but on the other hand I don't want to buy junk just to make something cheap.. and more to the point, why buy something when I have better that's not in use, for instance I have an XR30 I could put over an...

Anyone a general contractor or know of one you'd use?

2024 was a bad year for me, without going into details I now own an old(ish) home in San Bruno that I need to renovate to get to "rental ready" state, this includes by is not limited to, redoing the electrical (upgrading panel, plus others), possible plumbing, flooring, painting, amongst other...

    Store closing

Went there once years ago, pretty simple ask, just needed some snails for a cleanup crew didn't feel like ordering a hundred or so from those bulk places online, and while I was warned he has a gruff/grumpy demeanor it was a bit overblown. That said, the store did feel like it was on...

    New Year’s Reefsolutions 2025

Maybe actually put a fish in the tank... but then I have to feed it, so I dunno... that one is up in the air. Clean out a bunch of stuff I have from the days of me being a reef child. Although I did move all the glass panels from my 200 into my greenhouse just to get them out of the way, and...

    Bangai’s bred in my tank!

Yeah, there's a reason why all these "designer" clownfish started popping up in the hobby, because breeding standard clownfish species simply wasn't profitable except at certain scales and even then there was a reason why tank bred/raised were 2-3x the cost of wild. But all those inbred mutants...

    Bulk soda ash mixed brown

I wouldn't be surprised if the brown is just impurities (I would never trust Amazon listing details as accurate) and you probably could just filter them out by pushing them through a sediment filter. But I'm a known cheap ass who isn't too afraid to do things to save a buck :D
