AI Vega Power Supply Dead

I just got home and noticed one of the AI Vegas over the garage tank is off. Looked over everything and noticed the power supply was slightly melted. What would cause this? I believe this was a power supply I bought on Amazon in 2018. I’ll have to see if anyone in Buy/Sale/Trade forum has a power supply laying around.

To answer your question bluntly...heat did this. I don't see any evidence that the magic smoke was released from any of the caps or traces inside. Do you smell burning inside? If not, my next guess is an external source.

There was a smell but don’t know if that was just the melting plastic. The capacitor seems to be bulging in the middle.

Yep, that's it! Sorry I didn't see it in the first pictures. You can try to replace it and test your soldering skills, but I would try to find a used assembly online.

the smell of electronics burning (aka that expensive smell) is quite a bit different from plastic smell. While the cap does look off, not sure why that would cause the case to melt, if electrolytic compound caught fire there should be scorch marks from it.

That said, a 36V power brick will cost you $20-30 on Amazon. I don't think I would bother replacing the cap unless you do have electronics skills. Only thing I would keep is the plug as the barrel size of the connector may not be the same (it's often a pain to find the one you need), you could get adapters, but sometimes it's just easier to reuse an old cable.

I did buy a new power supply. It won’t arrive until the 8th-10th.

Did some more looking of the failed power supply. The plastic cover on the capacitor came off. The butt end of the capacitor did bulge. Also the board seems discolored. Does some of the shouldering seem like shoddy work?

That looks burnt and shorted
