Our mission

Bah!

Molokini is a nice trip, it's at least 30 feet deep, but its super clear waters, it's a marine preserve. It was funny there was this group of young chinese ladies sitting near me and g/f, they were speaking Mandarin which she could understand, one of them was feeling seasick and sat near the back of the boat, as soon as we got there she apparently hurled over the side (the free breakfast we got) and she told her friends "All the fish came out of no where" that's one way to chum the water :D

Just if you go, take the morning trip, the afternoon one is cheaper but often the winds kick up and there's a 50/50 chance you won't get to go there, but to some other place, where as the morning trip is almost guaranteed to get there.

My rental contract didn't specifically say anything about not going to Hana, but yeah it is a twisty road that gets quite narrow, I wanted to do the sunrise ontop of Haleakala but I could only imagine the line of cars to get up there, and then getting stuck in traffic only to miss it... either way, I didn't mind sleeping in :D

Also there is now a ferry from Maui to Oahu. You may want to consider spending a day on oahu.

I believe most contracts will prohibit the road from the pools to Kehei because it's gravel with nothing around, at least that's what it was like long ago, when I was there.

hahayou guys should be writing travel guides. :D thank you all so much for the info. im sure i will have a blast. and yes, i did notice that from some map i downloaded online it had three parts that you couldnt drive the rental car in. that sucks!!! but oh well. im sure ill figure out how to get around that! LOL
oo i so want to do the sunrise at haleakala, sounded pretty cool.. but alas, waking up THAT early during my vacation doesnt sound that great. lol.
im about to go shopping in a little bit to get some stuff for the trip, including the cameras, and cheapie clothes that i wont worry about ruining while im out hiking and swimming.
the ferry idea sounds great. I think i might like to do that! thanks for the idea.

Well I went a grand total of one time, and even though Maui is big enough to drive the whole thing in a day, I'm sure I didn't do everything, the city you're staying in was far enough away from where I stayed that I'm sure there are it's only little gems to discover up there. For us, the main goal on the trip was to do everything that tourists are supposed to do, Iao Valley, Haleakala, Road to Hana, Luau, Snorkel at beaches, next trip we'll focus more on fewer things to do.

One thing I really didn't get a chance to do is some nice dining experiences. we had the "condo pad" so I cooked a lot (saved tons of money though, even though everything is more expensive there... and that from a San Franciscite!), we did have a couple meals out but they were over expensive and kind of drab to be honest, but then again Maui seems to be way more touristy as a result you'll have more crap places. One place I read about was in one of the hotels Humuhumunukunukaapua'a (yeah same as the state fish) apparently you dine on a glass floor over a reef or something, however it was quite a bit on the pricy side, definitely a second trip activity though.

We did end up going to Kauai as well, it was cheaper to take the puddle jumper to Kauai and then a plane from there back to SF than it was to fly from Maui back to SF (or oakland/SJ), over all 3 extra days on another island ended up costing about the same cost for our trip than if we took a flight back from Maui (yeah the ticket was that much more expensive!). Kauai had some nice restaurants too, one had some killer mac & cheese (and I'm usually against that due to principle).

Oh yeah, on your shopping trip bring plenty of sunscreen, make that your daily ritual before you leave, and throughout the day as needed, I managed to get through 10 days without getting burnt once anywhere (and I burn fairly easily). I do wish that "reef-safe" sunscreen was available though, however I question it's effectiveness.

Was that the road along the south coast? If so yeah that road itself now is completely closed, you can't get there with any car much less a rental. You can however take the "Road to Hana" and from there hike in to the seven pools.

The road to hana is kind of hohum however once you get there and check out the other stuff (black sand beach) it's worth it IMO, just pack plenty of food, snacks, and water.

The southern road is, if you look at a map (google maps for instance), you'll see a road that runs along the southern part of the island, that road is closed and from what i understand, closed indefinitely due to rock slides. If you want to get to the pools you need to go along the North & East coast to get there, go to Hana first, then onto the pools, which the last time I went was all paved.

lol sunscreen is at the top of my list. i never used to burn, but in hawaii, i will burn for sure! so yeah.. going to get the sunscreen today. ill get like three different kinds, and then just try them all and see which one works best for snorkeling. cant wait. :D well... i CAN wait to burn. haha i hate getting burnt.

im sure we wont be doing the fine dining on this trip, were going with my boyfriends parents and my cousin, and i doubt that the men would want to spend the money on fine dining as opposed to other activities. so maybe me and my boyfriends mom will go out for a nice dinner one night or something. the glass bottom sounds really cool. man, im having dreams of maui already. haha i dreamt that i was in maui and i saw some dolphins. hopefully thats a sign. hehehe

I used to lived on an island for 7 months and went swimming in the beach for 4-5 hours a day. I guess my skin get used to it ;D ..

Yeah, but you're only like 24 years old yet look way older Phong ;) Me on the other hand, on the first day of class most students think I'm a student too, but then again I burn like nobody's business

ReeferGirl: The "pools" are the "Seven Sacred Pools" they're off on the east coast of the island, really long drive to get there, is it worth it or not... depends what you're up to... had I know you were going to be going with your whole extended family I probably wouldn't have suggested them ;) However if you take the "Road to Hana" you might as well see everything over there, including a black sand beach which just looks awesome.

ok i gotcha. :) we went to this great black san beach a couple years ago on the big island. sooo nice.
ugh, im so lazy, i havent even started packing yet LOL!!!! such a procrastinator! boooooo. haha i guess its the whole WORK thing.. i still have to work this week, so im super tired when i get home, and all i want to do is play some Call of Duty, and then go to bed lol!!
