Booo? Wait your going to Maui? I'd miss the meeting in a heartbeat if I was going to Maui, plus they do have good BBQ in Maui, Kalbi, teriyaki, fresh Ono, I'm salavating, two scoops please, and a cold Bud.

I'm going to miss the bbq too :(. my wife wants to go to Las Vegas that weekend.

I have to find someone to pick some stuff for me at the meeting.

No BBQ in Maui, Kalbi, teriyaki, fresh On etc, but I did pick up a fresh (just out of the oven) sourdough loaf and a 6pack of Anchor Steam Beer!
I did catch a 30+" halibut out of a canoe @ Pigeon Point (the shark capital of the world).

And I didn't get any of it :( I thought we where friends :p
Sorry my friend, that was a few years ago, we crashed the canoe two years ago, and are waiting for another free one :D

Now I just buy my seafood from my "connection" ;)

Your creative, build one......haven't you seen Survivor Man? Just grab some logs, some small trees to bash into rope and away you go :) Just watch out for the bears and snakes :p
The biggest enemy at PP is the poison oak, yah know, the same vicious strain that's at Año, I'm sure you've experienced it ;). Give me bears, snakes, the man in the gray suit, I don't care, that poison oak is crazy potent. >:(

I do like the DIY canoe idea though, I'll meet you half way, we can get a heat on at Gazo's and go try and build one on the rocks at PP. Maybe you can grab some half burnt pallet wood from pleasures to get started, leave the nails on the beach though, we'll use Macrocystis to lash the boat together :D

If you happen to swing by the Maui Ocean center (I highly recommend it btw), can you do me a favor and take a ton of pictures of the outdoor tanks (with fish, not the ones with turtles & sharks), especially the glass and framing around it... I've had crazy ideas since I got back :D Oh and I'd advise taking a laptop if you going for any length of time, not to use the internet or anything, but simply someplace to dump all your photos even a 2gig memory card on a camera of 6-10MP will fill up in a hurry :)

We had great fun in Maui (and to a lesser extent Kauai but I liked the food there better) in January, perfect weather, fun snorkling, fun just being lazy.

I think after years going to the ER for PO that I'm finally over it :) I was in it this summer and didn't get it :p NICE to say the least. I had to pull some one out of it who was passed out in it and I was in shorts. I know I had exposure as I pulled a leaf out of my flips!!

:D we already have our Maui Ocean Center tickets!!! ill take pictures for you. :D im so excited. but i still am bummed that im going to miss the meeting, i havent been to a meeting besides the swap!!

No worries! My first meeting was the frag swap (in feb). My second was the BOD...it wasn't until my 3rd meeting that I actually went to a normal meeting lol.

LOL ok... i wont feel so bad then. muahahah cause ill be in Hawaii yayyy!!! :D cant WAIT to get in the water and look at the fish! ill try to take some underwater pictures, but the case to make my sony camera water tight is like 100 bucks or some crap. id MUCH rather throw that $100 back into my tanks here at the house...

Just a heads up, the cases for sony camera's work fine and MAN! having an underwater digital camera while snorkeling/scuba is amazing. IIRC they're good to 30m or so, pretty much as deep as an average person would go. I'd lend you my gf's...but it's my gf's.

What part of the island are you staying? I can give you some heads up on decent places to go if you're near Kihei at all. Also unless you're going to scuba, don't worry about the underwater camera housing, I'd swing by walmart which is right near the airport (as is costco, so you have a kitchen unit in your place stock up on food before going there :D), get a portable/disposable waterproof camera, when I went they had the one time use ones for $10, or for $15 they had a reloadable one (which was a much better deal because we took 6 rolls of film). Pictures were kinda sorta ok, but it's definitely a cheap camera, wide fields of view and large objects are what you should aim for, no macro close ups or any of that, but if you don't scuba only snorkel you're not going to get that close to many corals anyways.

Not saying a digital camera case is a bad thing (hell for $100 I'd probably have gone that route too, but the ones for my olympus I couldn't find for less than $300), it's just like you said, your memories are going to be worth a lot, use that $100 towards your next trip back to maui :D

Thanks for the info. :) we are staying in Kapalua i think, at the villas. never been there, so i have no idea where it is, relative to kehei, but going to the store and costco is exactly what we will want to do, and ill get the disposable cameras. im not going scuba diving, im not certified, so i think i'll be able to catch some OK shots of fish. LOL maybe ill put my sony in a bag and seal it food-saver style. HAHA just kidding.. i could only imagine the disaster that would cause haha!!

thanks for the tips. what is there to do? do you have a favorite snorkel spot?

reefergirl- there are probably places that will take you diving even though you're not certified. It's the "discovery scuba" program or something. When I went to Oahu few weeks ago I did the same thing. The only reason that I preferred the digital camera while snorkeling (almost every day) was so that I could tell if I got a decent picture of a certain fish/coral/shrimp or if I had to dive down to it again (I did a lot of surface diving down to ~10' for a few min at a time).

oo cool, thanks, ill look into that :D sounds pretty cool. ugh, i wish it was time already!!!! hate waiting, knowing something cool is coming up soon!!

Yeah, you can do your certification/diving all in one there, hell it's better than a swimming pool training :D Although if you're worried about the $100 cost of an underwater camera.... you can also do Snuba too, which is scuba but you have a hose connected to you (but mind you these are rather expensive, $100+ per person, type things).

Kapulua is the North West part of the island, use google maps, and while I didn't go that far on North, a buddy of mine stayed up there as well. He said the beaches lacked sand (rocky) however you still could snorkel and see fish (he wasn't a coral guy so I don't know how abundant they are), I'm not sure of the wind directions that time of year however as that might make snorkeling unfavorable up there. However he did say there were some neat lava formations that looked surreal. Great thing about Maui is no place really takes that long to drive to, except maybe Hana and that's due to the road not so much the distance.

Favorite place to snorkel? Yeah we did, there was this beach (unfortunately I forget the name) that was a little south of Kehei in Wailea (that might very well be the beach name), it's a small beach, doesn't get really crowded though due to lack of parking (which means you need to get there by around 9-10am or you're not going to find parking, and the surrounding areas have no parking allowed on the streets anywhere).

Here's a google maps satellite area of the beach (you can scroll out to find out how to get there)
MAP
But you can see the main reef structure here from space :D the white shows where the water is crashing, so you can literally walk on sand to the reef area (although swimming with flippers is WAY faster) and if you're worried about be thrashed against the rocks (again depends how bad the water is at the time) you can still swim over quite a bit of reef without worries.

But again, this is fairly far from you, and parking is extremely limited, so sorry I can't help for snorkel spots. When you hit the airport near the baggage area there are a ton of free pamphlets grab as many as you can, a few of them give you the snorkel spots, however some of them seemed a little suspect (again time of year means oodles). Oh and don't go at noon-1pm because they'll already be crowded, go snorkeling in the morning, or in the late afternoon (I suggest mornings because fish are much more active it seems). Either way I'm sure you'll have a blast, and use google maps satellite view! It'll give you a good view of beaches AND coral reefs near you.

Some fun things on Maui (from my trip 15-20 yrs ago): Catamarran snorkling trip from beach at the International Hotel at Kehei or Wailea, it's been a long time, to Molokini, a crater sticking out of the water offshore. Lots of fun, games, drinking, fun snorkeling. Lots of fish, not sure about corals, before reef tank days. Morning trips are less windy.

Driving the circle to Hana and Seven Pools, we did it in two days. Hiked through guava and bamboo forests to 100-200 ft waterfall at seven pools. Bamboo forest was very cool. Driving from the Seven Pools to Kehei is forbidden by the car rental contract, but you only live once (gravel road). You'll always remember the trip.

Sunrise at the top of Haleakala. Supposed to see the bolt of orange light at the point of sunrise????????? Probably not worth it unless you're interested in native birds at Hosmers Grove.

If I remember more, I'll post again.
