So I"m looking to buy Beau's 120g tank and would like some help.

I"m new to this world so I"m planning on having a shop come out to do the maintenance on the tank every 2weeks or month.

I'm located in Los Altos Hills so if any members could give me some recommended shops for maintenance I would greatly appreciate it.

I would also like some suggestions on how to build up this tank and what type of fish, inverts, coral etc to get.

I've been researching a lot of fish and I understand from one shop that the crosshatch triggers are okay for a reef tank. I was thinking to get a pair as the core fish for the tank. Any other suggestions for the main fish attraction for the tank?

Best Regards,

Jesse

Hi,
Welcome to BAR..
IMO, Crosshatch Trigger is too big for that tank. You want something around 200G+ with 8' long.

The Aquarium Showroom is top notch. www.TheAqauriumShowroom.com

That area is also in Tuberiders backyad and he's top notch as well.

The SF stores may offer service that far down.... Ocean Treasures or Aquatic Central - both of them are top notch as well :)

All the above are either BAR sponsors or on the BAR BOD :)

Go buy a pair of Ocellaris clowns when you set up your tank. They would be great for the tank! They are reef safe, easy to care for, they only get 3" or so, they are very pretty, they amuse children who think they are actually nemo, and they add lots personality to the tank!

planning on getting a pair but I need other fish as well! :)

Trying to better understand what is the right mix of fish, inverts, etc for a 120g tank.

Well for inverts you are going to need a LOT of hermit crabs and a LOT of snails and probably two cleaner shrimp. I've only kept small tanks so let the experts talk about what fish to get.

Come on man don't go with clown fish, they're so... yeah... over done.

What I would first do is decided what types of corals you'd like to have, as well as other inverts since your fish choices could easily negate your invert choices.

Get a bunch of small fish. :)
Also, I suggest you start looking into new reflector for the light. Those reflectors look pretty old.

A school of Chromis looks awesome to me :) but I also like Anthias and Wrasses as well. You have a lot of choices and a lot of research ahead of you.

To start the tank a school of five blue or green chromis might look good. They are $2 each a one of the LFS I know and they would be a great addition to your reef community!

If you want fish that truly school instead of shoal and peck at each other until you get down to a small group or one individual (chromis), check out barred gobies, and rocket (a.k.a. scissortail) gobies, they are a ton of fun to watch.

AFA bigger fish, it's always good to get fish that have a job, smaller tangs and foxfaces are real nice.

If you plan on putting in 3"+ of sand, get some Jaw Fish! They were so fun to watch until I went on vacation and one died then the other committed suicide in my Anemone.

I just spit out my coffee on my keyboard........I never knew Fish committed suicide

IDK, maybe something was wrong with his brain. He disappeared and his hole was touching the tentacles of the anemones so I'm pretty sure that is what happened.

Ah thanks for the info, I knew they created a pecking order, I didn't know they killed.

Green chromis are well known for becoming quite aggressive as they get larger and are therefore a poor recommendation for your tank. I would look into assessors myself but a harem of anthias can be quite pretty.

+1 for the green chromis--make sure you get at least 6 because they freak out if they don't have enough friends. Also, IMO I would recommend against any hermit crabs. They don't really do a good job against algae and they eat a ton of your micro organisms in the tank. Your better off getting some cleaner shrimp or a sea urchin for algae control.

My favorite fish you should add--6 line wrasse. really pretty. very outgoing. and looks cool as it zooms in and out of your rock work.

IMO, some six-line wrasses (about 2 out of 3) have behavioral issues and pick on other fish a lot. I have one that is that special one without the bad behavior, but I'm selling him because he is getting too big for my 34g. Also, they eat all your copepods :(
