Derek's 225g - Magnifica / SPS Reef

Don’t take these much anymore cause I rarely turn the pumps off now, but it’s still my favorite view - unfortunately now pretty hindered by all the lighting:

Also caught a live urchin carrying around a dead one (DOA from reef cleaners.org):

Tank is doing well - wife and kids were out of town for a few days and noticed an immediate increase in PH and an immediate increase in alk consumption. Whether or not this is due to new growth or some chemical process, it’s clear that at least in my tank when pH goes up, even a little, alk consumption also increases. The opposite happens when relatives are staying with us and there’s more people breathing in the house too.
Maybe a dumb question but has your mag nem ever moved around? It seems the model citizen in the middle of all your sps.

I really like nems but I definitely don't wanna consider adding any of my bubble tips to the 200gal. One of them is moving around once a week it seems. (I probably have close to 20 at this point in different tanks just none in my main biocube)

I noticed the same that if PH goes up, alk consumption goes up, but it should still use a decent amount of alk to buffer the high CO2 with guests in the house - just not for growth purposes. This is why alk is not a great indicator of growth as many assume, but calcium.

Btw, do you ever frag this one - I saw this yesterday at Neptune and really liked it shape (staghorn?).

My tangs frag it for me sometimes, I just gave one away. I can bring a couple to the potluck. I think it’s actually a Mille or Spath.

How much longer before you pull the mag nem for more sps real estate!??
;)
Never! Where would the clowns live and spawn then!?!

Mags are a lot easier to manage (in this regard….not others) than BTA because their movement is very predictable. They will always move upward, seeking a high point with a large flat space for their large foot. So I’ve isolated him on a single piece of rock with a nice flat top, and pointed a bright white Kessil directly at him. Then hammer him with flow.

This seems to keep him in place - sometimes he will scoot around a bit on top of the rock, but naturally never wants to go too far down any one side.

They get very large, mine is sometimes 16-18” across. The sting is really nasty for SOME corals but some actually tolerate it pretty well, though I try to give it plenty of space. Clowns love it too, and it’s my favorite thing in the tank no question. But I can’t say I recommend it for 99% of reefers…
