Derek's 225g - Magnifica / SPS Reef

So I finally decided to scrape away a bunch of corraline, and my light rack collapsed - luckily WHILE i was holding it. The little plastic eyehook I got from tnutz.com failed. FYI to @Darkxerox since I think I recommended these. I would AVOID them after all.

I replaced the 2x XF350 gyres with an Octo Pulse 4 per some folks recommendations. Really loving it so far. Works with the wave engine, looks good, moves a TON of water, and presumably won't have all the issues I had with the gyres. This thing moves water at a pretty good pace the FULL 6ft of my tank - something the XF350 did not do. I don't think MP40s go 6ft either. And it was only $200 (pump only):

Lastly - I finished the full 3-course Oxolinic protocol, it's been about a week or so since finishing. I wasn't having any major issues - things just looked "off" to me. Also the wounds from my stupid goby dropping sand on corals seemed extra slow to heal (or wouldn't heal at all). I realize this was maybe a little bit of an impulsive decision, but I trust Rich and the risk seemed low so I just pulled the trigger.

I can say nothing bad happened - seeing some red cyano but this comes and goes in my tank so probably unrelated. Corals DO seem perkier already, and I am seeing some better encrusting action - so will keep an eye on things but initial results are positive.

Overall very happy with the tank. Blues with orange filter FTS after cleaning all the corraline around the edges:

One pulse replaced two XF350s, and shows better flow? I might start believing in miracles again. I am sceptical of the Oxo stuff you are all doing. I am glad the falling light rack did not cause any damage.

I didn't say better - I think 2 XF350s move a lot MORE water (I have a second pulse 4 on the way to play around with). But the Pulse4 definitely moves water FARTHER. I think it also has some advantages in terms of form factor and (hopefully) longevity/maintenance. I wouldn't necessarily say "better" though - I was pretty happy with how the xf350s performed in terms of flow. But I am impressed with the pulse so far.

It couldn't have happened at a better time. It could have randomly crushed inside the tank while u were away.

Where did the plastic part fail? I'm guessing one of these snapped? Maybe plastic from heat causing it to become brittle? View attachment 66683

Right at the peak of the eyelet where the cable is applying pressure. The one in the foreground is still intact, it's the one in the background actually that split through the top (though you can't tell in the pick - there's a crack through it).

Thankfully you were already holding onto it that is kind of crazy it just broke how long did you have them for? What did you do for a replacement?

I'm still holding it.
I’m doing the same thing as @Darkxerox with the 2040 aluminum extrusion. I was kinda worried about that plastic eye part though. Instead I went with these and using wire hooks with an M4 screw. I actually just got my package in so I’ll see how it works

Yeah that's what I did, I had some onhand in the garage, thankfully.

Where did you get the eye hooks? I was looking for something like that on tnutz but couldn’t find it. I honestly got confused with all the different types of extrusion. Their customer service contacted me about my order because a lot of the accessories I ordered weren’t compatible with the extrusion I chose (2040) and they helped me choose compatible ones. I asked Nicrew what size screws were on their hanging mounts since I already have a bunch on hand and they said M4 so I just screwed those into the tnutz M4 nut

Ignore the unevenness. Still gotta get rid of those mounted lights so I can raise the aluminum bar and get some 3D printed mounts for my lights

I never trusted those ceiling hooks the threads are so tiny over time under load they tend to break where the hook meets the thread.. 1/4 inch lag screw hooks into wood no worries..

Your tank looks like a Vegas Buffet! Gets me hungry!! Awesome work!

Just got them on Amazon. You just need to match the size (M5, M4, etc) and thread pitch with a nut for 2020 (same as your 2040). Sounds like you got it sorted out but lemme know if you need any help. There are a lot of options.
