I thought for sure mine was toast. I’m trying to determine if cutting off the old part that did die-off would help now

I would leave any skeleton that the coral doesn't have to relay down. The flesh can grow over old/dead skeleton if it is healthy now.

1-month update:

coral has encrusted pretty well and also killed the coral below it, didn't know chalice has long sweepers.
I think there are 3 new eyes/mouths. should I leave it like this or get a bigger tile?

Dec update, I counted 17 mouths, it's growing under the tile, not sure what to do now.
