Hawaiian Yellow Tangs...

Have arrived at my local LFS! Only a measly $299. Christ, I fleeced myself with selling two of them along with a purple and 10+ other fish for $400!

I’d have to do some more research if I were to ever do such a thing, but I wanna say I heard on a BRSTV vid that you can catch fish for your own personal use, its the commercial export that is banned

That seems very unlikely to me that they would just allow a non-Hawaiian to come and catch fish and take them to California for personal use. If you have a reference I’d be interested to learn more just out of curiosity.

Shipping to and from HI with AG/Live animals is quite the hassle.

I read some posts on a forum last night, want to say r2r, they were discussing the subject. Very split, some said legal, some said illegal, OP said he talked to the relevant authorities and they said its ok, you just cant ever sell the fish (would be hard to enforce) because then that would be considered exporting. Post was 2 years old, could be outdated. And like I said, Ryan from BRS mentioned it in a video with the WWC guy. That video wasnt as old, wanna say 6 months or so

I agree. The rules don’t make sense. I did quite a bit of research because I wanted to do a cold water - pacific hand collected reef. After all my research I found for a guy like me it wasn’t legally possible. But for food consumption the rules are fairly relaxed. Just didn’t seem fair, because...

Every state/county will have their own rules and regulations for collection of different types of animals, but in general, it seems fairly common to be legal to collect animals for personal use. Crossing state borders can possibly get tricky sometimes. I researched reptiles a while ago, it is illegal to export any california native reptile, but as long as you have a valid fishing license, you can collect any of them for personal use, aside from the few endangered species.

Bit off topic, but I saved an endangered native turtle from getting squashed in the road out here before

Additionally, please be aware that any taking of aquarium fish or other aquatic life in the West Hawai‘i Regional Fishery Management Area is prohibited.

Can I transport the aquatic life I collect for my personal home aquarium out of state?​

Yes, although you should check with the appropriate agency in your home state for any restrictions on the kinds of animals they will allow to be imported. Many states have alien species concerns, which may include microscopic organisms, pathogens, or parasites in the water or on the fish. You should also check with your airline to find out their requirements and recommendations for shipping live fish.

Do I need a license or permit to collect aquatic life for my personal home aquarium?​

No. You may collect aquatic life for your home aquarium without a license or permit, provided you use legal gear and methods. Small mesh throw nets are always prohibited. Regulations such as minimum size, season, bag limits, etc., still apply. Please be aware that any taking of aquarium fish or other aquatic life in the West Hawai‘i Regional Fishery Management Area is prohibited.

I dont fly very often, and have never gone to an expo out of state before, and brought coral back. I’ve read about other’s doing it plenty of times. In that thread I linked, someone talks about bringing a carpet anemone as a carry on. Plenty of examples if you look for them
