Can I collect aquatic life for my personal home aquarium?

Yes. You may recreationally collect aquatic life for your personal home aquarium. Please be sure to utilize legal gear and follow all other applicable regulations. Additionally, please be aware that any taking of aquarium fish or other aquatic life in the West Hawai‘i Regional Fishery Management Area is prohibited.

Can I transport the aquatic life I collect for my personal home aquarium out of state?

Yes, although you should check with the appropriate agency in your home state for any restrictions on the kinds of animals they will allow to be imported. Many states have alien species concerns, which may include microscopic organisms, pathogens, or parasites in the water or on the fish. You should also check with your airline to find out their requirements and recommendations for shipping live fish.

Do I need a license or permit to collect aquatic life for my personal home aquarium?

No. You may collect aquatic life for your home aquarium without a license or permit, provided you use legal gear and methods. Small mesh throw nets are always prohibited. Regulations such as minimum size, season, bag limits, etc., still apply. Please be aware that any taking of aquarium fish or other aquatic life in the West Hawai‘i Regional Fishery Management Area is prohibited.

lol where on TSA does it say that?

Good luck.
I think some of the guys that do coral shows fly with coral, probably wouldn’t be different for fish. I remember in a conversation that the guy from cali kid in concord mentioned he did it for special peices when he grabbed select peices from their facility in La.

i flew out of southwest a few months ago with 4x frag containers that carried sps and torches in an insulated bag. I left the containers in the bin by themselves, they went through the xray machine, and was told to step aside for inspection. They made me open each container up and I said they were live animals with that same print out in my hand. They asked the manager to come, he only looked at them and told me its okay and to proceed on my way.

something like this:

I have a couple of friends that works for TSA at OAK and SFO. Two of them are reefers. The 3.4oz liquid limit doesn’t apply to live fish and corals and a few other things such as baby formula, medicine, etc…..in a reasonable quantity. Also, lots of videos on YouTube with people taking live fish and corals through TSA with no issues. Just additional screening and swab test needed usually. I believe @NanoCrazed has flown with a Chicago anemone from Chicago back to the bay.

It’s well known that if there is a living animal in the liquid TSA will let it through after additional inspection. Idea being that all the dangerous stuff they are worried about wouldn’t have an animal living in it.

Hawaii is one of the most confusing states on fishing regulations and is always changing!
Locals and active military do not need a license for saltwater.. Non residents need to buy a license wether a one day/ few days or a year for saltwater.. Everyone needs a freshwater fishing license. Of course children under a certain age do not need license..
You can fish in some of the reserves which have different regulations each of their own.
They did extend the fishing ban on achilles tang

How would anyone catch a small fish for our tanks? They're so fast and easily dart into rocks and coral as soon as you come near them with a net.
Does anyone have experience with this?
I've caught blennies from tidepools but I'm more curious about fish in open waters.
