When I fish freshwater its mostly fly fishing up in northern Ca and Oregon but occasionally Wyoming or Utah drifting rivers. Although Nevada has some nice lakes like Pyramid. Halibut do prefer sandy bottoms mostly. Sometimes you can find schools concentrated areas with alota fish and limit out easily otherwise your covering ground on the move to locate fish
