Cali Kid Corals

krak256's 80g build

As some of you may know, I recently moved to the Bay Area from NY. I attempted to move the livestock from my 40g over, which didn't turn out so well. Below is a picture of my old 40g, which was pretty full:

Before my move, I bought an 80g Deep Blue tank as I loved the dimensions (4ft and wide) but wanted to limit the gallons as it would make water changes in an apt more difficult. I decided to wanted to try building my own stand and luckily had a father-in-law who had a ton of tools:

After arriving in the Bay Area, I started setting up the new tank:

Equipment list if anyone is interested:
2x Radion XR30 G4 Pro
48 inch Aquatic Life Hybrid
Jebao SCP 120 (from old tank)
MP40 QD (from old tank)
Trigger Sapphire 34 inch sump
Jebao DCP 6500 return pump
Reef Octopus Classic 110 INT (from old tank)
Apex EL
Tunze Osomolator (from old tank)
2x BRS dosing pumps (from old tank)

At this point I decided to have my 40g livestock shipped over, which was a huge mistake. I won't go into details here, but there was a lot of issues with Fedex...

Luckily a few pieces did manage to survive the trip:

Since my tank in NY was still running at the time, I didn't have all my equipment and @Coral reefer @ofzakaria were nice enough to coordinate and lend me a skimmer.

I was supposed to have my live rock shipped over as well but unfortunately FedEx happened to "lose" that box (more likely it was leaking and they tossed it). I have always done dry rock and let it cycle but given this new tank was a complete restart for me, I decided to buy 60 lbs of rock from KP Aquatics. While I had to deal with a bunch of hitchhikers (mostly red emerald crabs, pistol shrimp, pencil urchins, brittle stars, and a few gorilla crabs), I was very happy with the purchase:

Now after it finally has settled in, here is the tank currently:

I'm debating about whether or not I should even use the T5s given I don't have many corals now and the Radions seem sufficient. Also the Jebao SCP 120 seems to be providing enough flow, even behind the rock, so I haven't hooked up the MP40. Would love to get other people's opinion on those.

Hello... r you be able to ID this hitch hikers ?

Looking good! I have the same exact tank, lights, sump, pumps and DIY stand :). For comparison, I run an MP40, MP10 and 3-4 different smaller powerheads. I find that one single powerhead on each side is just a tad insufficient given the 24" depth. But my tank is fairly packed and also BB. Good luck with the build!

How high off the water do you have your lights?

Try and put the shipping mishaps behind you, and continue on with the new tank because ITS looking GREAT! it's about getting over the bad and looking to the future. Your new set up will be better than ever. welcome to the club BAR

appreciate the words, definitely was a huge heartache losing everything but definitely trying to look forward.

Got a few more frags recently.

In the right corner, I have 2 maricultured frags I got from AC last weekend. I'm trying to acclimate them to my lighting as they seem to be a bit bleached out. Right now they're sitting under ~150-200 PAR. Has anyone had success with maricultured frags? I've tried a piece or two in the past but never had great success.

SPS seem to be growing but relatively slow. I have a bit of dino on the sand despite no detectable nitrates. I was feeding about 3x a day but recently cut back to 2 and feel like the dinos have actually gotten worse.

Current stock list:
- purple tang
- 2 black storms
- 2 dispar anthias
- royal gramma
- helfrichi firefish
- bicolor blenny
- carpenters wrasse
- leopard wrasse

I'm thinking about adding 2 more anthias, perhaps bartlett.
