Yeah they did that at my old school once, just left them out in the hallway at the end of the semester, thought about it but really didn't have a need for one (this was pre-child, now I'm wishing I did get one) but I did notice someone in the astronomy department with one her desk like wrong direction woman! 
Lots of free stuff you can get from colleges near the end of the semester, books, computers (albeit really old ones, and probably needing a new hard drive), everything!
