MP40-internal impeller

Hi everyone,

I recently purchased a secondhand MP40, but when I got it home, it was making a loud, harsh noise. I took it apart and discovered that the internal impeller is rusted out. Unfortunately, the seller from Marketplace has not responded to my messages.

Has anyone successfully repaired an MP40 with this issue? I would appreciate any advice or tips on replacing the internal impeller. or if this should just go in the trash

Trash or ship it to ecotech and have them "fix" which means they will make you pay to ship it to them then give you a deal on a replacement. It's trash because that means it got water in it, which best case destroyed the bearings but more likely corroded other stuff too. I've taken these apart and partially refurbished, but once they're like this my experience is they're dead. Happened to me once by just a trickle of water getting on it, because the dry side has zero water protection at the cord.

Best option is trash and buy the jebao equivalent. I have both and will only going forwards by the jebao because it's just as quiet and is as cheap as getting a dryside replacement for a MP.

My only complaint with the jebao ones is the programming is very limited. 12 modes on a 24hr period.

Also, I have had 4 smart controllers from jebao for a few years and they are incredibly unreliable for maintaining connection with each other.

Still,you can buy 3 of them for the cost of an mp40 and you can buy 2 more for the cost of repairing your Westside .

I got a used mp40 that where the Westside was dropped and I need to try to get it apart and see if I can make it functional again.

It's a shame we don't have the right to repair with access to parts so we don't have to throw shit away everytime something fails. I'm looking at you, Kessil.

I am looking for some guidance on repairing the pump. If anyone can point me in the right direction regarding the specific parts to buy—such as the bearing sizes and specifications for the dry side—or where to source individual components, I would really appreciate it.

I also want to alert the community about the seller I purchased this from. They also sold me an MP10 wet side advertised as new, but packaged a used wet side instead. I will be sharing their name shortly to warn others.

If you want to save money you could check out the DMP powerheads from Jebao. Those are the only alternative to the Ecotech MP pumps if you are looking for no wires in the tank.

I have a pair. They are ok but the flow is not the same and the memory for programming is very limited compared to ecotech but the jebao app was stupid easy to hack (with claude) and my Home Assistant OS can change the flow as many times a day as I want. Still not 100% reliable though.

I actually watched all of them but they are the older MP40s. anyway I think i will just throw it away. if anyone want it let me know.

I think they are all basic design. If you have a digital caliper measuring tool. You can find out the bearing size and change them out. You can remove them and spin them on your finger like a fidget spinner. It should be smooth and free. Clean up the magnets and windings and you’re done. That’s about all you can do.
Honestly tho. I don’t think any mp should be run over 50-70% they all make noise and heat.

I think you both should name him, not really to shame them but for everyone here, so that we all can be a little more vigilant.. will definitely help some of us.

I originally chose not to name him because I reached out to him three different times to give him an opportunity to make things right. I wasn’t interested in creating drama or going after him over the money. What bothered me was the principle and the value of. But I guess some don’t have any!!!


When I met Jordan, he told me he was selling his reef stuff for a little cheaper because he wanted it to stay within the hobby. I trusted what he told me, shook his hand, and took him at his word.


Unfortunately, I later had an issue with what I purchased from him. Now that Tu has also had a similar experience with him, I feel like it’s important to let the community know what happened.


Jordan also appears to still have quite a few items for sale, so I’m posting this simply as a buyer-beware warning. Please do your own research and ask questions before purchasing anything from him.


The Bay Area reefing community is pretty tight-knit, and most of us eventually cross paths. I’m not posting this because I’m worried about getting my money back. I’m posting it because I don’t want someone else to go through the same experience.


Lesson learned for me: always verify equipment and be cautious, even when someone seems trustworthy.


I hope this helps someone avoid a bad experience.

appreciate it @Ayman.. I personally trust people for their word, and if things don't go as expected, I always try to make things right.. Ghosting is a way of living, I absolutely despise people who do that.. thanks for the heads-up.

My first two mp40's I bought used needed dry sides as well as constantly tickering to get them to be quiet. I won't buy a used one anymore unless I can try it under water or from a trusted source. People sometimes suck!
