High Tide Aquatics

New tank soon ..I think

So, there is a 99% chance that I'll be sticking around at my place for another year or so..and I'm sick of my tank.

It is a open top, unplumbed, eurobrace tank with the dimensions of a truvu 40 (36"). It was made for me when I did a lot of freshwater aquascaping. It's on a really nice mahogany stand, but the inside is partitioned into two cabinets rather than one large area. I hate the tank because it is unplumbed (fugly with all the stuff I have as HOBs) and even uglier that it is just a big frag tank.

I also have a 14g biocube. It is a bit of an algae farm now, but at least it isn't inherantly fugly. I want to replace both tanks with one.

So here is the options and I'd like a bit of feedback (sometimes you foolios think of something I blindly overlook).
I want a tank that is 24 to 36" long. Something deep is definitely nice.

Options I have thought of so far:

1) get a 40g truvu that is plumbed and use a canopy
+can use current stand, have 4x t5 tek fixture already, relatively cheap
-have to use a small sump (unless I'm creative and use two but bridge them through the wall lol), only 16" deep, ok quality (I don't like that the acrylic is so thin)

2) Elos 70
+pretty, near ideal dimensions, open top (pretty), have a 250 SE fixture already
-$$$$$, need everything new, open top (large light spill)

3) get 40g breeder
+ can potentially use current 4xt5, good dimensions, not too expensive, can use bigger sump.
- need to buy new stand, maybe new lights, small change vs 40g truvu

4) those darn unobtanium 24x24x18 marineland cubes
+dimensions look nice, got 250 MH
-can't get and need stand

5) custom
+get exactly what I want
-might cost the same as an elos when all is said and done

6) other????????

I know of a custom guy down in LA that is very reasonable for glass. I'd go with custom to get exactly what you want :)

What's the footprint of your stand? 36 x 18?

Another option to add in there, is the Oceanic Tech 70, they have the ultra thin profile overflow in them, and starphire is an option (standard?). It's what Jeremy got I believe (just different sized)

Edit: whoops, didn't realize you said 16" not 18... well you could cantilever the top 89% of the tank would still be on the stand proper, and if you simply put an extension (well cover the entire top that is), you could easily and safely put the deeper tank on it.

one 250W MH should be able to light the 40G breeder. I have a 150W DE over mine.

If money isn't a problem, go with a 36x36 man.. Much better dimension and you still can use your 250W light.

I think the elos looks pretty sweet, but if you can get more what you want for the same cost, maybe custom would be better?

Regardless, go glass!

Tony, I know you want a deeper tank, but I have a 40x20x16 deep glass tank with stand, that would be cheap. It's drilled for a 1" overflow.

Thanks steve, but I actually prefer a 24 to 36" for now. Appreciate it!

Erin, having had both, I really do like glass more. My acrylic is quite beat up right now.

Gresham, can you PM me the builder name or their "distributor?"

Phong, absolutely..if I could do it as a through-wall tank into the garage :p Not an option.

Mike, the footprint is 36x16. The stand has a 3/4" lip on the front and sides which has a 1/4" radius. It wouldn't work well elevated as an 18. The 70 oceanic is nice, but I really don't want a tank that tall. I also abhor the eurobrace. Sure it is visually appealing, but it is just a big light mask unless you have one of the larfer 24" deep tanks.

You know, Max got these newer rimless tanks in. Dunno the specs but he has 5 sizes.

the rimless tank at Max's place are very nice. Not cheap though. If you like, I might be able to go there to take some pics for you Tony.

40G breeder is a great tank.. I love it..

The nestables are cheap, not sure what your talking about. They come 5 to a set and Max sells them for pretty darn cheap!!!

tell him Gresham sent you, he'll give you some sort of deal

A hard time is some sort of deal FWIW, an ordeal :D

Not sure if he got some new one but last time I was there, IIRC he had some of the new Oceanic rimless tank . They look very nice. It's just too much for me but I'm cheap so I guess that doesn't really count :D .. Yup Max will always hook us up. There is no doubt about that

Nope, not a name brand. No name brand is nestable. First shelf on left across from the counter.

Illuminata is the series name of the new Oceanic, they are sweet!! but $$ too
I have a new Ultimate 70G in the 36" mark front Starphire and is drillable, PM me if interested

No the cheap ADA series has some catchy name, Do!Aqua. These are no name imports. They are like the ones Doug the rock man sells, but these are rectangular, not square. They are like the ones Catalina used to bring in. I'm sure you recognize them once you see them :)

Is like buying a BMW that has a scratch and they offer you a new one but you go ahead and use nail polish to cover the scratch and say "it's OK" If I was buying the tank second hand even if it was never used then might venture to an odd fix.
