High Tide Aquatics

New tank soon ..I think

So I stopped at AConcepts (on the way) and they have a bunch of the illunimata for a decent price ($189 for the 57g(?), $289 w/ overflow, and stand for $550. Currently a 20% discount on oceanic tanks/stands). Closer inspection showed what I expected: particle board..blaaah.

Then I went over to Max's to get another eyefull. He also is carrying them and made one stand of his own. Not sure of the price, but it was actual ply instead of particle. Max has a "new" eye candy tank which was quite nice. It was something like a 24x24x16" custom lee mar.

I think I'm just going to have to go custom afterall. Call me crazy, but I'd much rather the elos/illuminata if they were a couple inches shorter. A canopy is looking more and more tempting from a light spill perspective too.

Did you see the ones that Gresham talking about? Did you check the price on those?
I can build a stand for you for $400 J) ..

I didn't get prices but I saw them. they are like the ADA cubes. At least that is what I think he was referring to. They were on the shelf in several sizes which easily stacked within eachother. Sizes ranged from around 6 to 12"

Who are you going with for the build? It's always nice to go custom so you can get exactly what you want. I just picked up an ADA 32 gallon (24"x18"x18"). It's a pretty nice tank but will require a tad bit of work if you want to set it up with a sump. It has low iron glass all around too which is a plus. I'm not sure if it's smaller then what you're looking for.

Going rimless and no canopy would imply the use of a nice looking light fixture hanging off the ceiling or attached to a clean bracket; Giesemann, AM?
Some one in San Bruno (I can't remember who) has a canopy suspended over the tank, nice look.

I'd charge you $600 for a stand (I'll give Phong $400 and keep $200) :D

I'm possibly in temp solution mode (because a 120 once I own a place is an even better idea lol).

I've heard mixed things, albeit a small sampling pool (and I forget the sources to weigh credibility), but how bad is it to modify an old tank? the tank is about 5years old (3/8" acrylic). I am thinking of:
1) removing all live stock
2) vinegar bath the tank
3) polish out some of the scratches
4) cementing in a corner overflow (internal, drilled through the bottom)

...either that or a truvu 40 with an internal overflow (since it fits the current stand).

Oh don't glue a 5 year old tank. The stress built up in the acrylic tend to make it craze the second any glue touches it. Just a warning, I've blown up (crazed to death) several tanks that we not event 4 years old :(

I wonder if doing a light sanding where you want to bond additional acrylic (aka baffles) would help at all.

Won't help with crazing. You'd have to remove too much. try taking any old acrylic to be worked on by a por and you'll get turned away. Even drilling is risky.
