I think you just go for it. Gotta just push though at a good place through bandsaw. If you do it timid and slow, you'll prolly do more damage to flesh.

How about cut through the soft stuff with a scalpel first and follow through with bone cut. That seems better...

I think you disturb it a bit so it retracts and use a bandsaw. I have been advised to use an iodine dip afterwards to prevent infection.
