PIF: Diatomaceous earth

I bought a 5lb box of pool grade diatomaceous earth a couple years back and barely made a dent usage since I only use a couple tablespoons at a time. If anyone wants any feel free to grab some since you can't buy this stuff in small quantities. Pickup in Dublin

For those wondering, DE gets used to charge pleated filters like the marineland magnum. This can filter very small particulates like the white cloud after adding new sand, or even dinos and parasties like ich. Great for the occasional polishing of water.

How often would you implement this. Also, how much did you use typically to charge the filter?

I only use it on an as needed basis. Time's i've used it:

• When I want to remove all the very fine particulates in the water column. I don't use any filter socks or rollers
• Added new sand, wanted to clear out the white cloud
• Ich control in a QT tank, though I don't use it for such anymore
• During dino outbreak to assist in removing any free floating ones
• Algae or bacteria bloom. This can clear up the water

Yup I have a bag of food grate DE also for pest control. I've put lines of it behind baseboards or in gaps where ant trails form it works great at deterring them. The food grade stuff is much finer and can't be used with aquarium filters. I learned the hard way lol
