Our mission

Seems like LPS is increasing in popularity!

I overheard some people at the frag swap talking about LPS and how they were hoping to get to the tables before they were all gone. And while picking, I noticed that there was almost an even number of people at all three shelves, which is unusual from my limited frag-swap experience. People generally swarm the SPS table, then run over to see if there are any zoos (ignoring all other softies), then go after LPS (avoiding candycane and torch) then finally grudgingly go over to the poor non-zoos softies (leathers, colts, kenya trees, XENIA!)

The LPS shelves were stripped bare in a hurry this time!

Also, the LPS shelves were the least populated a the start...are people hoarding their LPS at home?!

Weird, but maybe the focus of other clubs is more LPS? I'll admit though that I like LPS the best as well. SPS just dies fast in my tank and softies grow so fast that everyone has a specimen of every softy already!

Anyone else notice the LPS fever?

V

LPS doesn't grow fast, and more difficult to frag.

LPS is my favorite and that is where I spent my time at the swap. But the frags I brought were SPS and zoas.

hey, jeremy sorry to jump in on this thread like this but I cant pm you, got a question about one of the frags from the swap, I will pm you from cvr
thanks jeremy

Our swaps tend to be skimpy on LPS in general.

The interest at the LPS shelves might have been due to people looking for Aussie frags.

I was also frustrated at this, I was hoping to expand my LPS collection.

I also noticed the labeling on the LPS, softies, and zoa was extremely poor...I'm wondering if in some cases it might have been by design, I was at LPS first round E, saw an unrecognizable coral (slimy, dark, and closed up) simply marked with a black marker "C". Someone walked right up to it like they were on a mission and snatched the sucker like it was a rare coral...seemed a little strange to me

I was in group F and by that time anything of interest was gone. I was a little bummed because all I wanted out of the entire frag swap was a new nice LPS. However, I did end up with a few nice things from Dudley and Sergio :-D

I wished I would have brought some of my acans frags after reading this. We stayed the night in San Jose and didn't want to risk anything so I think we were the only people who paid to get in (so sad). One thing is that I atleast wait a week before giving out a frag to make sure it heals but these been fragged for 2-3 weeks now so it would have been great. Next frag swap or if we do have a swap for the north coast reefers, you'll see some frags from me for sure.

LPS are more difficult to frag period, with sps you can reach in with bone cutters and snip of a few branches no problem, LPS corals typically you need to have a dremel, take the colony out of the tank, and then frag, many of my LPS are part of my rockwork as a result fragging needs to be something REALLY special that I do.

I do have a handful of non-aussie acans I could have fragged but my dremel went missing and I didn't feel like using the chisel on the pieces.

We were trying to make sure everything was labled but some things did slip through (not ones I put out though ::) )

I managed to grab what I thought was a nive purple acan with pink eyes but it's not doing to hot. I hope it pulls through, it is almost 5 polyps... fingers crossed....

I picked that one up and looked at it, it was really coming apart, I think Mike informed me that they had to do a water change on it, so I passed.

But that was the only keeper left by first round E in LPS, hope it comes through for you!

Cheers,

Josh

Maybe we need an informal LPS only swap! But one for one swaps?

Maybe just post an informal LPS one for one swap and set to meet up at some random future club meeting...meaning not official swap, just an LPS lover's swap? Maybe, bring a frag, get a ticket, then redeem your ticket for a frag. Would be smaller and informal, but fair.

Or maybe just DBTC them. Just thinking out loud.

The only piece of LPS I got was a Blasto Merletti (I think) from MrUgly...
It was from the Ugmeister, so I figured it's something good! QTing it now, I promise to bring a frag to the next swap!

All my nice LPS went into DBTC prior to the swap. If I had more after DBTC frags, that would have changed, but that is just how it panned out for me :(

Na, there was 2 labled purple acan and I did a water change on that one if I recall... although I could have mixed them up..... ah man... I hope not??

LPS will continue to RE-increase in popularity as more and more fall prey to AEFW, monti nudi, red bugs, etc. Far less to worry with LPS, and they tend not to bleach on the drop of a dime :)

QT, QT, QT...

You'd think with AEFW, the popularity of QT tanks (yes, that's redundant if QT=Quarantine Tank) would increase.

I wonder how we can hammer Quarantine into the minds of our fellow reefers?! Even a simple $40-$50 Walmart starter 10g tank is perfect for QT (and comes with heater, light, filter, 10g tank).

Acutally, that would make a good raffle prize :p

You think people are going to do more steps or rather take the easy way out and get infected? Thus far the majority I have run across opt for the second ;0 QT is not the norm in the US, sorry.

QT also requires additional space that some people may not have. Sure a 10g isn't much space, but even if one has space, for someone with a wife who only wants a "nice" tank i sight, then you are left with hoping you have garage space..then you need a chiller if you didn't have one cause garage temps can be nuts.
