the color changing mixed stuff, gallon quantity. And I can be tempted to buy more should we be close to the amount required.

Forgive my ignorance...but what does the resin actually help do?

If you have an RODI setup, the resin does the final polish on your water. If you run DI columns only(which I do), the resin is used for the entire purification process with regard to dissolved ions.
