http://www.netl.doe.gov/ssl/PDFs/EnergyEfficiencyWhiteLEDs.pdf While this report was focused on LED lighting, it does have general luminous efficacy for other lighting sources. Linear fluorescent ranged from 50-100 lm/W while Metal halide was 50-90 lm/W.

Of course each combination of reflector, bulb, ballast will have different efficiencies for our tanks and what we are trying to each achieve.

I put 4-T5s over my 115g (5' x 18" wide x 24" deep) and it wasn't too shabby... however when I tossed a couple halides over it, the RBTAs were all over that like stink on sh.. well you get the idea, the downside is the zoas and other palys that were used to lower light did brown a bit.
