vermetid snail puncture wound...not feeling so hot

On Saturday I was punctured by a vermetid and it now is infected. I have been on antibiotics since monday, got a shot in the bum, everything. I am getting a little nervous now. The swelling is spreading a little, the pain is getting worse and the wound is darkening. I feel like my finger is going to pop!

Has anyone had this happen? What ended up happening? What were you given?

I was given smz/tmp ds 800-160.

Im hoping I see improvement soon!
 
I'd get myself to the ER or Clinic now...don't wait for the infection to spread or sepsis to set in...it could lead to amputation or death.

Don't remember the exact antibiotics they put me on, but at the time they treated me for the AB-resistant strains of staph that apparently were going around just as a precaution (two antibiotics). They did clean the wound out, a culture didn't show anything though

However I did have noticeable swelling reduction the next day. Then again my hand was puffed up to the size of a training boxing glove, cellulitis.

Very smart to keep in close contact with the doc and get there sooner rather than later if you're not feeling so well. A blood or other infection which spreads from the wound site is where the concern should ratchet up.

I had one of these wounds a couple months back when reaching to grap a spawning pot and not realizing there was a worm on the back. It took a perfect little core sample out of my finger and left a hole. I purged the wound site multiple times by squeezing the finger and then flushed it well with alcohol before applying a topical antibiotic and banding it up. Fortunately nothing more significant occurred but it was red for a couple days and took a week or two for the wound to fully heal.

Good luck with yours and hope it heals quickly.
 
Ok, I got another shot yesterday. They shot me with Rocephen. I am now full of that stuff, taking smz/tmp ds 800-160 used for staph
and ciprofoloxacin which is used for marine bacteria as well as other things.

I also went to the lab for culturing and blood work. This morning the redness and tenderness seems to be a little better and the swelling may have gone down a little.

I have also been referred to an infectious disease specialist if things do not continue on the positive path. Thank you all for the well wishes! I will definitely be getting aqua gloves for rock work from now on!

Hopefully it keeps on going in a positive direction.

Good to hear you're on the mend. If at any time the swelling goes up, there's a colour change for the worse on the wound, pain increases, or you see a red line creep up your wrist and arm following the vein get to the ER or Rapid Response Clinic immediately. If things go south it can get bad VERY QUICKLY! This is one instance that being brave can kill ya..

Yeah, I got it fairly bad (i've seen worse though), where I essentially was "Brave" (funny how that word often is a synonym for stupid), figured it would eventually heal, after all every other injury through life has... it got worse, my hand was puffed up like a mini-boxing glove (used for training) luckily I worked in an environment where there were chemists and biologists, and they said some things that got me there in a hurry.

Next time I got "poked" I did what the doctor did the first time, I drew a line around the red part (later in the day), and as soon as the red went beyond that, I was at the doctors.
