Fishy Business

Wil did another good thing

Coral reefer

Past President
@Turkeysammich has been doing some pretty cool things by taking in corals and fish from tank breakdowns and distributing them to club members.
I know this can ruffle feathers at times as people want to get things and feel like they should have been first in line or whatever.
There are times when someone just needs a thing gone and whoever can take it they are fine to with that. It’s up to them. That’s fine.
There are other times when someone posts they want the animals to go to good homes and the equipment to be out to good use. That’s cool too.
There are other times when people buy a system to break it down, part it out, maybe keep some and sell the rest, that’s ok too.
I don’t think it’s cool if people give stuff away and then it gets sold. My opinion. Now worries of you don’t share it.
I also don’t think it’s realistic for a lot of people to have done what wil did over the last couple days. He did it. Again. It benefits the club at large. It helps the person donating their stuff to deal with one person.
He isn’t being greedy. He isn’t hate keeping. He’s putting his body where his heart is and doing the work, and spending the money to hire movers when necessary, and driving multiple hours to make it happen. And then after all that spending the time to get everything situated, and fragged, and mounted. It’s a lot. Trust me.
The kicker is, at the end when he is doing all this for little personal gain, sometimes none, the thanks he gets is being criticized and blamed and accused behind the scenes by people who feel wronged.
I’ve experienced this when I was on the board for over a decade, and it really sucks, and made me want to quit.
Luckily wil is older, wiser, and believes in the goodness of the club. Which is great, because most of the time most of us are just that.
Let’s remember we are all here together to get better at being better to our animals, and we are animals, so let’s be as good as we can to each other.
ASSUME THE BEST OF EACH OTHER AS MUCH AS YOU CAN. PLEASE!

Anyone who is mad at Will for this should check themselves. Please mention names. I won't be giving them any of my future frags.
It’s not just this. There are always people who will find a reason to not like something no matter what you do. I found I had to trust myself and do what I thought was right and let people think what they will. I think wil is smart enough to do that even better than I did.

Well said Mike.

What Mike said about someone always getting upset is very true. Much easier to be a critic than it is to be a doer/decider. For me, the key is to try to average out the complaints with the silent majority who (hopefully) appreciate what you’re doing. It’s hard because the complainers are louder. When the appreciative people express their appreciation it makes it easier.

Thank you Will.

Thanks for all the kind words.
I’m not going to get into details.
There’s a lot of good people on here, a lot of new people that need help, guidance, just so they don’t get riped off.
Then theres some people that think just because they paid 30 dollars. They are entitled to stuff and criticize how things are done by us people who volunteered to help.
Lastly. Theres the vultures, the people who look for free stuff so they can resell it. Yes they are on here.
I had to move quickly/ broke some etiquette and ethics rules maybe. It was my deal. Not BAR’s deal. In the end, that setup had to be gone now. The vultures were are ready there. The owner told me. BAR members will receive all the live stock for free. I made sure that was part of my deal. A few people called me to ask if I needed help but were unavailable to help as it had to be gone now. 1 person helped me. He worked his arse off for two days for free. I thank you bar member as I couldn’t have done it without you. I appreciate your friendship and support. It took us 20 hours between two people, 300lbs of sand, 400lbs of rock, had to hire movers to move the aquarium ( extremely heavy ). Drove over 8 hours.
So the Next time of you get free stuff. Just appreciate it but also know it wasn’t free.
To the newbie. Just know. BAR is here to help you.
Now you guys know.Kinda.
Oh and my friend got injured to top it off.

You’re too kind…
To the newbie, you’ll probably burn out if you keep running like that. Just apologize or leave. Good luck.

I’ve meant to post this for a while now because I want to take the time to thank Will @Turkeysammich for everything he has done for both the club and me.

When my Trident wasn’t working, he fixed it for me. When I needed to redo my sump because the macroalgae kept clogging my skimmer and affecting testing, he helped me reset it—with Erin’s @Kensington Reefer help. When I plumbed my 30G long frag tank into my main system, he was right there lending a hand.

Some chatter around the club suggests that Will only takes freebies for himself or doesn’t share. From my experience, the opposite is true. When someone posts in PIF, Will might be the first or the last to reply, but ultimately, the original poster decides who gets it. Many times, when a member has a large colony to give away, Will (or another BOD) steps in to frag and redistribute it so more people in the club can benefit. Will always think about the community first.

Whenever someone asks for something he has but doesn’t use, he usually gives it away. I don’t think the club always recognizes how much he contributes behind the scenes. For example, when Erik needed to trim his SPS, Will volunteered to pick it up and divide it among members. He knows Erik personally, and he was the one who invited Erik to join BAR. Knowing Erik, I can say he doesn’t want 20–30 people coming to his house. Will was responsible for collecting everything and sharing it with the club.

When Howie (Mark) posted about finding homes for his livestock, I reached out, thinking I’d buy something, but he was giving it away. I suggested involving a BOD to ensure the livestock went to good homes within BAR. Mark mentioned he was already talking with Will, and I knew then that everything would be distributed. Some members may have been impatient, but it’s important to remember: the PIF donor chooses who receives the items. Very few people in our club have the time, space, and resources to rehome entire tanks of coral and then give them away. Will even pay out of pocket for movers to help with one of these tank breakdowns. When I want to give something away, I don’t just give it to the first person who replies to me or DM me. I make sure they have contributed something back to the club.

BAR is where strangers become friends, and friends gradually become like family. Remember that our strength is supporting each other and building a community rooted in generosity, patience, and trust. BAR has been my second home and family.

Thank you, Will, for all you’ve done and continue to do for this club.

If you appreciate what Will has done for the club, please like this post to show your support.
