Jestersix

65 gallon tank

Here are those pouches! If I don't fold/ roll up the nori the fish will literally pull the whole sheet though the holes!
I kinda have one like it.

Though it looks a little different not sure if this will work in the method you described. Lol I also discovered my maroon likes nori too.

My foxface does a lot of the same things that Paul's does, they are full of personality.

They are huge fish though, and can grow to be 10". Mine has grown to 8" in less than 2 years - I would not think they would be very happy in a 65g for very long.

Same deal Just roll frozens like a tootsie roll flip ends and stuff in bag!
I'd consider foxface reef safe with caution! All mine have been model citizens though!! But plenty of people have had issues with them eating coral on various forums..

If you are open to a fish that might be reef safe or might pick at corals a bit, have you considered dwarf angels? Angelfish are so pretty!
I actually have considered the flame dwarf, and there is a blue and yellow one, but they are 50/50 maybe 60/40 will eat corals lol. That makes them at the bottom of my I would consider list. Wouldn't want my hammers eaten

I wonder how often fish eating corals is a side effect of fish being underfed. Certainly they eat coral in the wild, but if fed repeatedly through the day with a feeder, and fed a lot, I wonder how often they'd choose to bother coral.

I've somehow gotten lucky with never having had that issue (AFAIK).

I agree and feel it’s true for aggression also. People are so afraid to feed their fish, I wonder how many of the aggressive and/or coral eating reputations fish get are just related to a lack of food (or space).

I'm only really nervous to feed to much in my biocube32 it's protein skimmer isn’t as good and i struggled with p04 over 1.5-2.
Only lately I've been able to stay under .5 only concern is for the sps in the tank.

My caution with over feeding the new tank is a hold over from my experiences in the other tank I suspect.
I've never had a legit sump and proper skimmer so i'm mostly feeling it out as I go along. Not sure how what’s the right amount to feed etc. I'm sure i'll get it figured out in time, as i get more use to actually having a system with a sump and observations from future testing trends.
.

This is really dangerous advice, but I also wonder if the future solution for smaller tanks might be lanthanum chloride. I never tried it, but it'd take basically no equipment space and a very small amount should make big changes.

Maybe the future will be very heavy feeding + lanthanum chloride for P control + <?> for N control. At some point someone will release a lanthanum chloride reactor or something. Maybe that'll be even be the next Trident. They can measure P and dose, in theory they could dose lanthanum.

Again, not suggesting that in this case, and my comments about underfeeding weren't directly referring to this situation, though I know we discussed it in a different thread or comment set.

Currently carbon dosing works really well for nitrate control, but it's literally adding DOCs, trading inorganic nutrients for organic carbon. Potentially you could offset this with certain sponges and bacterias, but who even knows at this point

Yea i use Rowaphos in the 32 now to help with p04.

Update, added a tomini tang 1.5 weeks ago. he's been doing well and maroons ignore him and the other fish. I've just been letting this tank do it's thing. No hair algae in this tank. I het tons of alage on the glass making me wipe it off often. It's a odd alage not hair algae, comes of the glass with minimum effort.
Diatoms comes and goes on the rock work and crushed coral. Some days i see zero. Other day it could be on everything.

I stopped by Neptunes today for a quick water aqua spin water test. I was being lazy and, I've yet to have one done on this tank to compare to my own testing.

Seeing these results I will test tomorrow evening when I have time.

The salinity it shows, idk they use hanna checker same one as mine. I will calibrate mine to rule it off. But my salinity should be .025 what i run in all my tanks. If off i will address that first.

Alk would be a concern but won't adjust it until i test myself and salinity is confirmed good or low.

Biggest confusion part is po4 is very low, way lower than i would like.

I been feed tank like crazy per recommendations. Hammers look better but not great like in main tank. So I have a feeling something isn’t right.

Not sure if low Alk could do it?

Again not changing anything based off their spin test i would do my own test before taking any serious action.

Michael, what’s your target for po4? 0.10 I’d say is still pretty high? I’d be more worried about your nitrates, if they really are at 0. If your salinity is actually at 1.022, that’ll lower your alkalinity

It's the 1st time p04 has registered my test didn't use the ulr hanna, only low range one i was getting 0 on it.

I would be confident if it was say lets .15-.2

Just makes me nervous that p04 it’s not at all stable.

I will break out the ulr if i don't get a reading tomorrow on p04.

My main tank has stayed around. .2 -.5 for many months before that it was 1.5 for over a year. Any things looked great. I been feeding crazy in the 65, and using reef nutrition phytofeast plus alage nori to feed tang.

I pulled out mechincal filtration pads and only am using the skimmer alone.

I imagine if i took a day off heavy feeding then p04 would go back to nil.

Ie diatoms come when i feed heavy, than next day zero very clean rock work. Just confuses me as to that's happening
I'm not sure about nitrate being zero no test kit for it. Nor do i know if it's a major concern??? Nothing i fully understand pr ever paid attention to or tested for.

They did mention Nitrite was pretty high.
Is that a concern?

No panic here at all

Nitrites I’ve never tested for. I don’t think there’s any concern there. I’d say Nitrates are important to test for. Your nitrates should never be 0. Especially if you say you’re not reading any po4? Bottoming out on nutrients and it also being a new tank, is a recipe for Dino’s IMO. Are you sure you have diatoms and not dinos? Some dinos disappear at lights out as they go into the water column and then reappear.
