check with your local water company on this-chances are they are using chloramine/chlorine but then again with a tds of 400+ plus supposedly I wonder if they filter the water at all?!

In the east bay they do use chloramine and when I used to make my own water -I had a chloramine block in the second stage (sediment filter was first). I didn’t make RODI though as the TDS was 30 at the time.

SJ water does use chloramine, that information is public and they do call out that it may have an impact on live fish or aquatic animals:

Looks like they were doing a combo chlorine and chloramine mix before but now going all in on chloramine. Either way you def need a filter before it hits the RODI membrane -I believe it can damage it permanently..

Is it significant enough to get a $300 carbon filter?? All my RODI icp tests come back zeros across the board. Latest one was last month and membrane is 2 years old.

Whats the difference between the chorimine monster that I can’t just run a standard carbon block before the rodi. It says contact time, but doesnt a dual stage reactor provide the same benefit?

Probably not.

I run the chloramine block then the carbon block because brs said it was better if chloramine was in the water and it is in most places now.

What is making you question this now? I only would if everyone in a huge area all of a sudden lost a bunch of stuff. Also, couldn't you just add some Prime freshwater chloramine buster and let it sit a day, then it breaks down into chlorine and ammonia and evaporates, or according to the website bonds with other stuff and is easier to deal with from the biological filter.

In Livermore. I run the Monster. Is it worth $300? I don't know. Do I burn through less DI resins and membranes since? Maybe. I should have paid closer attention and taken notes. It makes me feel good having it but I can't tell if it had a positive effect on my reef. I was hoping it would save me more money on membrane and resin over the long term (taking notes could have answered this for me). I plan to make water for a long time.

We had this lengthy thread about this topic, which might be worth re-reading again if you have not: https://bareefers.org/forum/threads/challenges-in-removing-chloramine-in-rodi-setup.39238/

Re ICP: Can share your most recent RODI water test results which show that your water has 0 chloramine?
Icp cant show chloramine. Only the elements, but if I have zero Cl then I can’t have any Clhoramine.

Regardless I tested the water after the carbon blocks and all chloramine is removed from them.

Yes, hence my question :). Which test/brand is measuring CI for RODI?

How did you test for chloramine?

most ICP tests are only calibrated to test free chlorine only..They need to add another calibration to test for the combined molecule ammonia which makes up chloramine. So its normal for icp test to show zero chlorine even though chloramines are present in the sample. TDS meters in the same boat don’t show either even with zero tds. A simple chlorine test kit from Leslies Pool Supply or HD will not show chloramines only chlorine..However a total chlorine test kit also sold will show chloramines since its looking for that specific combination of molecules.
Chlorine listed on an icp test is actually chloride which is one of the most bountiful ions in the ocean. Im far from a chemist so please let me know if Im off base just familiar testing regular freshwater pools adding chlorine and also saltwater pools that convert salt into chlorine via electrolysis..You would think by now reefer icp tests would add chloramines but maybe since these test kits are cheap readily available?
Also you will get alot more bang for your buck adding a whole home water filtration kit made to reduce chlorine & chloramines.. For around 500 you can add an catalytic gac water canister filter good for 450,000 gallons of water bonus for cooking and showering..
