With the off the shelf pumps like Drew's you would connect them to a timer/controller.
For an all in one unit (bubble magus, GHL, etc) they come with their own timer on board, so no using up precious space on your controllers power bar.
However regardless of which one you go with all work on a timing mechanism and not a flow rate, so you would still need to figure out how much time gives you the volume of fluid you want.
When I got mine they had a 2 pump one that was upwards of $400 I think, so it really was a no brainer for me to go OEM parts, however if my pumps failed, I think I might go with the BM one for simplicity and not having to use up two ports on my AC3 power strip.
