Flesh eating bacteria in fishtanks

Don't get me wrong. I agree that the chance of contracting a major nastie is really low. I wear gloves mainly because I otherwise get stabbed by vermetids too often and have picked up rocks/coral only to know that I otherwise would have gripped into a bristle worm or two.

Isn't "flesh eating" bacteria a wee bit over the top? Seems to me many common bacterias "eat" flesh as well. You know, the bacteria around you most of the time, unless your in some super clean room?

Yep - Necrotizing fasciitis is known better as the flesh eating bacteria.

Myco is fish granuloma. Dumb common name.

The biggest problem with myco m is misdiagnosis. The second biggest problem is insurance taking a long time to approve you going to a specialist.

Notice in the article that its a fresh water tank and that they call myco rare.

Having had Myco I will say that the Staph infection that I got 20 or so years ago scares me a lot more than Myco. The Myco moved slow and was treated in a timely fashion, the Staph infection I got was thick black lines from my hand to nearly my armpit in 8 hours, that was unnerving and made me consider a career change.

Staff.... yes, on the leg. Scared the bejesus out of me, I was a kid.

Myco.... psssh been there, recognized it right off and dealt with it.

The urchin incident seemed FAR more serious then the myco Never seen a thumb grow to softball size. I thought it was going to blow. OK OK, baseball. I swear it felt like a basketball though!!!

Worst thing that happened to me was the vermetid snail puncture bit... I was blindly reaching into the tank and doing it a bit too quickly and got stabbed right in the knuckle... got swollen... next day hand was red, told my wife not to worry about it (notice the stupidity/manliness starting)... hurt like hell had to sleep with my hand sticking up like a flag pole.. went to work... biologist there said he'd fear for his life if that were him... needless to say went to the docs.. hand was swollen like a sparring glove and curled/contorted in an odd way (cellulitis), had a lovely red streak that went halfway up my hand... broad spectrum antibiotics did the job. Never knew exactly what the bacteria in question was they couldn't grow out a specimen (or some dumb ass lab tech guy screwed things up).

Happened again some time later, I drew a circle with a marker around the wound to show the redness, had an appointment the next day, it was larger.. same thing with antibiotics, no issues with cellulitis.

Either way, those little vermetid snail harpoons are tough buggers, like really thick hypodermic needles, a glove wouldn't have done squat unless it was made with metal plates. Your skin is your most important organ that protects you in tanks! Be careful how you move and where you're grabbing. Wash your hands after you're done (with actual soap and hot water, not just run them under the sink for 5 seconds), and check for scrapes/cuts, I tend to put antibiotic ointment if I get any big scrapes.

Didn't they mention this particular bacteria is found in swimming pools and such too? Next time you go swimming you better wear one of these:
