Gimmito's 450 gal L-shaped tank

Cycle update:

SG (1.026)
Temp (78)
PH (8.4)
Ammonia (0.25 ppm)-added 250 drops of ammonium chloride
Nitrite (1 ppm)
Nitrate (100 ppm)

Note: I found my Salifert test kits, they are so much easier to use than the old Red Sea test kits. I'm still looking into the Hanna checkers, or I might just bite the bullet and get a Hach or LaMotte colorimeter.

I finally received my Water Blaster HY-16000 return pump. Here's a little size comparison to it's lil brother the HY-3000 (which will run the media reactors).

Ok. I am just not a fan of using check valves.
As you get growth in them, they might not seal properly, and unless over sized they can restrict flow.
But all depends on how you use and maintain them.

Plumbing 101:

There's two type of check valves: a spring and a swing check valve. The former does restrict flow and can wear over time. The later, which I have, is a Spears tru union swing check valve which doesn't cut down very much on the flow (a simple flap that is pushed up or down by flow/backflow). It can be easily broken open to clean out algae and what not. A friend, Amphibious on TR was a steam fitter for over 40 years and suggested if you're plumbing from a garage to first floor to definitely install a swing check valve. :glasses:

I got my QT back from Gen. He patched the old bulkhead holes and drilled new ones higher up. I was getting too much bubbles and a slurping sound w/the old ones being too low. I installed some new bulkheads and added tru unions for easy disassembly.

Now comes water test time. A little trick a buddy showed me (way back when) is to add a little silicone on the threads.

There's way less noise now. I had to plumb off the return pump for the skimmer as opposed to feeding off the drain. I needed a slow flow to keep it from gurgling and bubbling too much. The ballvalves really helped dial in the flow.

I think I'll be able to get off for the frag swap, can I bring that one rock to you to get the magnets mounted ?

LMK if you need anymore rock also.

I will be at the swap, so sure thing on the rock for the mags - did you get the mags in also? I'll let you know if I need any rock, have a couple of projects in the works, just need to see what they will require.
