I am thinking about ordering some this weekend. Normally I wouldnt mind the waiting period of letting it cycle naturally but due to having to move in the next month or 2, I want to make sure cycle is complete. I did start the cycle process by throwing a piece of shrimp in this past weekend and a couple cups of live sand.

I was thinking let the ammonia build up and by the time I get the Dr.Tim's in the bacteria will take cafe of the ammonia build up? I know you said to not let it get past 2ppm but if it does, will it have an adverse effect on the whole cycling proccess?

I'm not exactly sure how the raw shrimp method then adding Dr. Tim's bacteria will effect the cycle. Dr. Tim does mention going above 5ppm slows down the cycle time, but if you do water changes and get it down to 2-3ppm it will accelerate again.

Hi Jim,

Wow, gotta love how your whole system is turning out! I was curious as to the type of tubing that you are using that is connected to your Reef Octopus SR-140, and where you found it.

Hi Mike,

I was using 3/4" spa flex, but the reactor and Y connector didn't fit it. I'm using 3/4" flex hose now that I bought from Urban Farmer in the city.

http://www.urbanfarmerstore.com/

A little trick is to heat up some water in a cup and dip the end of the tubing into the water for about 15 seconds before attaching to the fitting. It makes it more malleable and life easier. ;)

Jim,

Thanks for the info and the link!

The guinea coral (Bali Green Slimer) for the FT.

Just a quick question, Im about to start cycling my 2.9gallon, what do you recommend for the cycle process since its 100% dry rock and 100% live sand? Would the raw shrimp be sufficient? Or should I use the Dr tims like what you did?

Hi Michael,

It's totally up to you, both methods work. I like the option of controlling the cycle via ammonium chloride. Also, for such a small tank you would need only a small bottle of Dr. Tim's One and Only.

Eh for a tank that small you're betting off using a shrimp. You can probably get ammonia to show quickly. If you need a shrimp swing by and I'll get you one from the freezer. :D

John,

They're starting to come out...it might be a good time to try the others out. When is it a good time to swing by ?

Anytime after 5:30 works. Wed I get off work at 3 and Thurs. I work from home so anytime works. Weekend also works. LMK. :)

So Jim, does this officially mean that you now have something living in the system, or is the FT separate (can't remember from the visit). If indeed you now have something living in there, then I'm fearful that the title of "longest build in progress w/o any life" may fall to yours truly ...

However, if there is only one frag in there and something should happen to that, then the title becomes retroactive back to you!!!

Haha That'll be great since I currently don't have any right now. Might be kinda embarrassing if I go to Luckys to get only one. They might think its a prank :tired:

Thanks Mike for feedback!

LOL...I think I still have that dubious title of longest tank build w/o life in there. That frag is in the FT, which is seperate from the main display. Although, I do plan on getting some clowns soon, so that title may be passed to you my friend. ;)

How's the rockwork coming along by the way ? LMK if you ever need help moving rocks. I got pretty good lugging those "boulders" I got from you (just ask Jestersix). :D

The first time recharging my Kati Ani resins. The Kati resins use a diluted mixture of muriatic acid and is slowly dripped for 30-45 minutes via a carboy. The Ani resins use a diluted mixture of sodium hydroxide and is slow dripped the same way. The resins are then flushed until zero TDS is achieved.
