What should I get?!

I'm starting to think about the corals I want and where I want to put them.

This is what my tank looks like now:

I'm thinking a clam would be cool right in the middle on that ledge. Maybe an acro on the spikey bit on the right? I want Xenia somewhere... perhaps on the ledge on the left, or over on the far right with the star polyps. Toadstool somewhere? Not sure where, though.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

PS. I realize it's a little low for clams and acro, but the light is close to the surface, and the spots where I was thinking of having those are -directly- under the bulb, so hopefully it'll be enough.

Some will disagree with me but I don't think PC light is good enough for clam. Softy would be good for your tank. If you have $, ricordea and yuma are very nice coral.

If not...

:D

Toadstood is nice.. I love the green one. Mine is too small to frag now.. I got it from Tony (DBTC). I will put it back as soon as I can frag. It's only a 3/8" frag now ;D ..

yeah, I'm thinking maybe toadstool + clown sounds fun. It seems like some toadstools are flatter and some are more vase-shaped. Is the shape determined more by the species or the individual?

Hammer is nice, but watch out for sweepers in a small tank with the euphyllids.

If xenia, try to keep it on it's own rock, and kinda high up. They'll want to spread and climb.

How about candy cane, fox coral. favia, leptastrea, zoanthids, and green nepthea?

PM or email me if you want a toadstool from DBTC. I have a good size piece that has been acting shy on my tank and I'd like to pass it on. I also agree that softy's and LPS's are the way to go with your lighting.

I would stay away from SPS and clams. It can be done with PC's but I've seen enough people with failures to recommend it.

I'd like to try a clam and at least one SPS. I could build a new hood and put in a MH lamp, I guess. I dunno, it seems like there's a lot of superstition about lighting. Fluorescent lamps are not much less efficient than metal halide, per watt. Light power falls off with the square of distance, so having the lamp close to the water and the animal close to the light does a lot.

Quite a few nicer chalices and other LPS that do fine under lower light conditions

LPS is a good idea. Maybe on one of those lower rocks, if they're okay being further from the light?

Those are good ideas. I hadn't even considered most of them. I definitely want more zoanthids. I'm thinking of sprinkling little colonies of them all around the tank. Maybe candy cane or fox coral on the left ledge? The spreading is why I was thinking of putting the xenia on the far right with the green star polyp. Give them their own rock and let them duke it out. :-D

Oh that would be cool. Will you be at the frag swap? Can I let you know sometime between now and then?

If you want sps in your tank, try the Seriatopora and montipora species. They are lot hardy and might be able to tolerate your lighting. If you wanna try them let me know I can pack some corals for you.

Oh, that's a great suggestion. What color are the ones you have?
