Cali Kid Corals

Eric's Frag tank!!!

Now to decide if I want rocks and racks or just racks...

I vote just racks.

I like the idea of small rocks for the things you want to move to your DT eventually. I’m thinking of doing this myself - glue the frag to a small rock and then the rock to a plug. Let it encrust the rock and when it’s time to move it to the DT, just remove the plug.

I liked the rocks in my frag tank, but that was primarily cause it was also a display and in my living room. I was asked to not have it be industrial with a bunch of racks.

It is easier to manage growing corals on discs or plugs cause once zoas spread, or a coral encrusts it can be tough to take it off the rock.

I know you have a lot of rock though so if you do want to use it, maybe get a masonry bit and drill holes in the rock so you can still move stuff. Coral euphoria on YouTube has a cool system of gluing stuff to a tile with a rod and then using the rod to attach stuff. Someone on here pointed me to his channel for that reason

Bit of everything!

Not everything likes strong flow, in my sps frag tank, no problem with disc and no rack, but mixed Coral? YMMV

Exactly flow is important. Not super strong direct flow all the time on everything. But def enough not to let things settle, racks or not

Just started the cycle with Dr Tim's Ammonium Chloride. I was afraid after adding two 300w heaters last night that an non insulated garage would be to cold. To my surprise this morning my tank was up to temp!!! Not going to lie, I'm getting pretty excited for this build.

It’s all coming together. Are you putting the khg on this?

As long as you don't leave the garage door / window open, you'll be fine in there... I would just keep an eye out for those rare days temp drops to 35F even then, most will be fine. SPS will struggle below 74F unless they've been acclimated to do so... but even then you maybe only get 1 - 2 degrees below that as buffer

Just dosed Dr Tim's ammonium chloride to get it up to 2ppm again. I think this thing will be ready to go tomorrow. Temp hasn't been an issue so far and it's been pretty cold at nights. I've been checking the temp every morning around 6am and the lowest it has gotten was 75.

(Lights on for pic only)
