Thanks for allowing to join, my name is Amy. From Salinas, not close but not ar. I would like to start attending meetings and becoming a member. Dont have a reef set up but want to. Right now i have a 100 plus (think its 125 or so) set up with lots of live rock and a few fish (blue tang, true percula clown fish, algae blenny). Been up and running for about two years has some orange yumas and ricordea (various colors) that i put in and kinda took over. The tank is running off two fluvals right now but within next week going to move it all to another tank which i hope to make a reef. Changing over to put in a sump and skimmer. Not sure if i need a chiller but probably although it doesnt get to hot here. Hope not having a running reef doesnt hurt my chances of becoming a member. My husbands name is Jim and our kids are james (8), timothy (6), and audrey (2). also various animals on the property horses cat chickens (not ours they just pass through) and a peacock which lives in a tree (i imagine it got out of someones cage, he eats the grain outta the horses bin why he sticks around i think). When is the next meeting again?

Welcome to the forum. Having or Not having a reef tank is not a requirement to be a member. Feel free to look around and ask questions. and again Welcome.

Welcome amy, can you tell us a little more of your set up, what kind of lighting? Parameters? And I think not having a reef set up and asking for advise is much better than the other way around.

lets see its very simple setup right now

2 404 fluval canisters which i run chemipure, bimax rings, and run water polishing pads for a week once a month
2 seios set on ends to make a nice current through middle of tank
a coralife all in one lighting system which i love 2 250w halides 2 pcs which i upgraded from the 10k to 20k and the blue led moonlights which i love
Dont test for much right now but these are the test kits i have
nitrates 0
nitrites 0
ammonia 0
calcuim 390
ph 5 or 6 hard to read i think im color bind sometimes

I supplement with kent marine
tech cb
phytoplex 2 times a week
i soak boyds vita chem in dried cycopleeze and feed once or twice a week
ive used bionic in the past its ok but i prefer the kent
varing cubes depending on what i feel like times a week
spectrum pellets for the fish on days i dont feed the cycopleeze or cubes

my tank is running well the yumas have grown from 1 to over 12 in about a year i had a regal angel for about year and half but i killed her on accident cleaning the tank and removed a rock she was on, didnt realize she was outta water was a mess. I want another some day she was my favorite fish. All the rock is covered in purples and pinks so i think rock is cured enough for reef now. The tank i am going to move everything too is not here yet but when it comes ill post pics.

oh yeah new tank has sump with skimmer for sure but no chiller or o2 any suggestions on what i might want to buy for my reef. Lighting is pretty nice i think and there are 2 fans that will blow on the water.

Hi Amy,

I used to live on a minifarm too, but the animals were ours; milk goats, hens, ducks, dogs, cats, with the occasional pheasant, eagle, coyote, or neighbor's steer passing through. I miss it sometimes. Now I farm marine critters. :) It is nice to have more women interested in marine/reef tanks. :) Look for me at the next mtg. and I'll keep an eye out for you too! Hope to see you there.

Hello everyone. I just moved to the Bay area from the east coast (VA to CA). I liquidated all my livestock/equipment when I left, which consisted of a 90g full reef setup. It was painful to see it go, but it all went to good homes thanks to the Washington Area Marine Aquarium Society (WAMAS). Great group of people out there. I've been in the reef hobby for about 4-5 years now (was into FW before that). Now that we've moved here, I am going to downsize - find something that will fit in our tiny apartment. I'm considering the new 28g HQi cube. Read lots of info on it on various websites. I am still planning it all out, which add-ons to get, etc. My goal is to set up a mostly automated system which will do continuous water changes, auto-top-off, etc. But everything has to be miniaturized as compared to my 90g... I've seen some great mods of the HQi out there, including addition of an HOB refugium from CPR. I'm considering that option as well. I don't like the stand it comes with though, so am in the search for a cabinet with sufficient support and interior space for equipment. Setting up the RO/DI unit in the bathroom should be interesting ...

Other than that, I'm mostly a fish person, not an SPS person, though I'm sure that will change with the HQi. I have experience with tangs, blennies, clowns, gobies, and softies (not rics though). If you go to the WAMAS forums you will see many posts there from me. I tend to be pretty active. But with starting a new job out here, I will probably be lurking for several months before jumping in. I hope to attend the meeting. Looks like a great group you have going here. Looking forward to meeting everyone.

Hello, I'm new to this site and I thought this would be a good place to start. I was highly recommended to this site by Matt, who taught Marine 101 at Aquarium Concepts back in early October.

My name is Ryan, 27 years old, I live in San Ramon and I have recently started my first SW tank, a 24 gallon nano reef. It has been up and running for two weeks now and I'm still cycling. I have previous 4 years experience with freshwater, but I have to admit SW is a whole new ballgame. I feel quite the newb all over again and I figured hopefully meeting some local aquarist can widen my knowledge and enjoyment of this hobby.

For now I will snoop around these forums and poke my nose in once in awhile and I will learn more about the meetings that are held and hopefully get to know you guys a little better. Thanks!

Thanks for the warm welcome, Lyn.

Welcome and ask away. Reef talk is probably the best place for your reef related questions. Don't be afraid to ask what you might perceive as simple questions. You might also want to use the search function in case someone may have already covered it.
