Hi everyone! Is it possible to 3D print a bracket extension for the ReefBrite XHO LED Add-On Kit for the XR15? The 3D-printed shade is blocking it, and I haven’t been able to find anyone online who sells an extension.

I spent some time with chatGPT and it gave me this output, but anyone who has done it before or has a better idea to do this are welcome to give it a shot too.. Honestly, I have 0 idea how difficult it is to 3D print anything with these files.. I checked out the model in a 3d viewer, it looks like the slits are too close together imo and arent going to let enough flow through. id make them like 3/8" maybe even 1/2" between them ,they look not even 1/8"

This is a bit of an aside, but I was going to post about Astra and 3d printing, so piggybacking on that.

OpenAI's Astra model is fantastic at producing quality 3d printable files now. The earlier models out there did a bad job, even if you ran it in an agent style harness like claude or codex. They'd produced things that didn't fit together or had structural issues or weren't printable. You could coax it to sometimes get a usable thing, but it was hard.

The past week I've been doing this with Astra and the results are quite good.

First example is a light mount for my betta bowl. I gave it pictures of my setup and the light I'm using, and it put together a bunch of nice mockups and different designs.

After fine tuning I decided to use a dowel, and this is the current version it put designed:

The actual file it produced isn't an exact match for that, but it's good:

That includes that it designed and printed a clamp for the base, a removable piece to hide the cords, printable screws, ... These files are all printing perfectly cleanly. Screws and threaded inserts are doable in 3d printing, but tend to be a PITA. Getting the tolerances right is difficult. The screws it designed have nice grips on them and fit together very well; you can spin tighten them.

Here's a part from a different thing it designed for me. It not only included the printable screws, it built an insert that has flexible clips to lock it in place. I would not have thought to do that, and it would have taken me forever to do so.

So @spuri87 if you measured the parts right, it's very possible it generated you a good one, if you used the right model version. I'd suggest sharing your prompt, not just the files though. You can rip off some of the prompting I did in mine, including things like telling it to apply best practices, to help ensure it's what you want.

Where are you located? I'm in Redwood City and could try and print one when you give that info.

I used chatGPT 5.6 - sol model and gave it a basic prompt to give me the designs and then added more details to further solidify it:

"I want to create a 3d sump sock/polyfil holder like shown in the video.. it should fit in my 230.6 gallon waterbox sump (please check dimensions carefully).. Attaching video for reference.. you can also use https://www.saltwateraquarium.com/7-nosok-filter-sock-no-sock-replacement-silencer-cup-vca/ for inspiration and make something better"
