Reef 3D printing request thread

Looks great.. try it tomorrow in your reef tank and see if it’s actually as promising as it is in theory.

I personally don’t have a color preference, but before you spend time on my project request, please let me know how can we coordinate pickup.. I am in SJ, but can meet mid way if nothing else works out.. I really don’t want to bother you though to come down south for this, I would rather order from Etsy if it’s going to trouble you!

oh no worries I'll just mail them to you, it would cost us each more in gas than shipping.

I just ordered a roll of bone white, it'll be here on Thursday. how many do you want? can probably have them in the mail friday

im already done and sending to the printer to test lol. doing a flat bottom because concave will take longer to print and more glue to adhere

you might want the rough, concave texture for glue adhesion. a smooth surface is less likely to adhere.

I have mentioned this before and i will mention it again, be cautious of pigments in filaments. they are not all reef safe.

I highly recommend using natural filaments, lacking pigment. its going to get covered in something over time anyhow.

ahh crap didnt this about that, well i have some white.

I was thinking of just adding a couple holes to the bottom for the glue to adhere into. the concave design will take alot longer to print and also wont adhere to the print bed as well, and will take more glue to stick. ill work on it today and test it on some extra rock I have

here it is. works well. plug fits all the way in and has about 1mm clearance on the diameter.

not sure how much I like the white though. and I cant find any information about different colors not being reef safe. many people are printing those frag racks in neon colors with no problems as petg is not water soluble

I just used superglue, no harder than attaching a normal frag. still wanna tweak it just a bit though, and add the hole on the bottom.

tried bone white, still not a big fan of it. going to order some black. also going to experiment with the concave and also maybe like a little fins or feet on the bottom for the glue to grab onto better.

printing them in batches of 25. first is done. 2nd will be done in an hour or so

Usually I don't say this on public forums, but I had enough dealing with @VacavilleFC tantrums! After spending so much time with him to get this printed, he blatantly ghosted me.... can't believe, he actually ghosted me when I asked him how much shall I pay for the shipping, material and labor printing these super useful frag plug holders and a 3d printed frag holder rack! He said "nope, just helping out a fellow club member." can't believe I trusted him with this request!

Jokes apart, thank you so much Sir for helping me with these frag plug holders and rack.. They have made my life so much easier (though my big hermit crabs don't like these in their way and I can see them fighting these frag holders in the night time).. The end product is of wonderful quality and work you have put into designing these can clearly be seen.. I owe you a nice frag when we meet at the next swap! Thanks again.

black was definitely the right decision, almost invisible once you put a plug in them

I have one drying on a 2x2 tile right now because my conch keeps knocking the hammer over on the sand

agree, looks better but I guess in a few days any color becomes dark in the reef tank so wouldnt matter after a few days.. Yeah I had to pickup 2 frags from the sand today, hopefully wont be a regular occurrence
