Our mission

For those interested in buying G2 Red Sea tanks

After seeing a few Red Sea tank seam failures and having done a few reseals of them (1 complete tear down and 2 front panel removal and reseal plus adding bottom bracing) my opinion is it's poor manufacturing control. The way the silicone peels away from the front pane so cleanly makes me believe that the Red Sea tanks that do end up failing had poor bonding prep and the front pane had some contaminants and weren't cleaned well enough which effected how well the silicone bonded to the glass. I don't believe that floating the front pane has anything to do with the issue. My current (Mike's old tank) Lee Mar 225g has a floating front pane. This Lee Mar has been running I believe 11+ years under Mike, about 2 now under me and who knows how many years before that as Mike picked it up used.

I've seen them burst mainly from the bottom seal but have seen some burst between the side pane and front pane too. Which makes me hesitant to say it's a stand issue. 3ft and 4ft models (I believe the most commonly reported failures) I feel like the bottom glass as long as supported on the edges and setup to be level has enough strength to resist bowing.

My concluding thoughts are that it's random and some Red Sea's are well built and will hold up fine and some are a ticking time bomb.

…plural?
Mister Robinson’s neighborhood SNL!! Now I know we all have over 50 sphincter muscles in our bodies lol. Thanks to @JVU for the enlightenment and @derek_SR for the entertainment!!!

Ok folks I have the google sheet ready I think for data collection. Sent an email to one person to take a look but wouldn’t mind if someone with a lot of knowledge of tank construction and/or work on tanks (resealing etc) could take a prelim look such as @Arvin R before I release to the wild.

I am curious…do we have any evidence that the recent failures are actually G2’s? Or are we just taking the OP words for it?

The SN of the tank will indicate if it’s a G2 or not.

I spoke to my RS rep and he said Zero G2 have failed.

I was actually at aquatic collection last week and the owners said they have had almost no failures that they know about vs previous generation. Gave me some piece of mind

Just waiting on a couple responses but my google collection sheet is ready to go on probability of tank failures (namely Red Sea) vs other brands..
Looks good to me! Gave it a few days to see if I could think of any worthy additions and couldn't come up with any.

That is great to hear.

Does your rep know how many of the G1s failed that were reported? Or how many warranties exercised? I imagine they may not be allowed or want to mention that information but the answer would be very interesting.

Probably loose job for saying that lol, have to catch him after hours with a beer or two

I find it very hard to believe that Red Sea thinks zero of their G2 tanks have failed. Just based on the fact that so many people have said they had a G2 fail, and that they called Red Sea about it. The support team either must not be logging the failures or at least not informing their sales team.

I don’t doubt your personal experience selling tanks Robert, only the corporate level shenanigans that have become so common unfortunately.

In my world, where there are failures even when everything is working well, and they are supposed to be tracked- When a low failure rate is reported I’m more reassured than when a failure rate of zero is reported. With that point of view, I’d have a lot of respect for Red Sea if they published failure rate data and had a conclusion like “We had a 5-year failure rate of 3% in G1 systems, and were able to bring it down to 0.3% in the G2 line.” (I made up the numbers of course). To me, that would be very reassuring, where as saying zero isn’t.

I concur with that. One thing that did get my attention is they extended their warranty at some point from 2 to 5 years that speaks volumes in their faith of their tanks.

Question then is, to your point - are those (made up numbers) -within warranty of course. I was talking with Karson and he said the bigger issues are the resale of tanks in the way they are handled/stored -not sure if he was specifically referring to Red Sea or all tanks.

Other part of that conversation is that if warranty claim-takes about 3 weeks for replacement (approval) not sure what you are going to do in meantime?

Out of warranty -they can get it pretty fast if they don’t have it in stock.

But it makes me think -if I had a tank that was shipped from IM or glasscages or whoever and that leaks -how fast can they get a tank delivered for replacement.. and their policies within warranty.
